PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Clinical Psychologist August 2016-Present
I am a Staff Psychologist in the Compensation and Pension Service Line of the Fayetteville Veteran's Administration (VA) Medical Center. My clinic is located on Fort Bragg, NC as part of the Department of Defense and VA's Integrated Disability Evaluation System. I conduct psychological evaluations on active duty military clients who are being released from the service for medical reasons. I review their claims files, medical records and associated background materials; perform an examination; and document the examination electronically within 24 hours of seeing the client. I also conduct initially and follow-up evaluations for Veterans and participate in tele-health services on an as needed basis.
Clinical Psychologist July 2014-August 2016
I worked as a Psychologist for the Child and Family Behavioral Health System, Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, NC. I performed psychological evaluations using diagnostic interviewing, psychometric measures and behavioral assessment to accurately evaluate adolescents and adults based on ICD-10/DSM-5 criteria. I provided individual and group therapy to my clients, using Brief Solution-Focused, Cognitive Behavioral and Client-centered therapies. In collaboration with my patients, we developed and monitor measurable treatment goals and appropriately assessed treatment outcomes. I was responsible for maintaining documentation of patient care in accordance with current Department of Defense and Joint Commission standards. I also provided consultation to other healthcare professionals; crisis intervention and Critical Incident Stress Management for the community at large; and three hours of didactic instruction for my department’s Social Work Interns.
Assistant Professor of Psychology August 2013-June 2014
I taught in the Department of Psychology at Chowan University where I was responsible for courses in the undergraduate counseling track. This included general psychology, theories of personality, social psychology, abnormal psychology, introduction to counseling, group process and clinical practicum. I was the Faculty Advisor to the Psychology Club and I served on the University's Professional Development Committee.
Visiting Professor of Psychology August 2012-July 2013
I taught full time in support of the graduate psychology program at Georgia Southern University. My primary responsibilities were practicum supervision and teaching techniques of psychotherapy, psychopathology and ethics to doctoral students as well as senior seminar to advanced undergraduates. I also served on the doctoral program’s admissions committee, the department’s clinical committee and advised undergraduate and graduate students.
Staff Psychologist April 2011-August 2012
I worked for the U.S. Air Force as a contract Psychologist with an emphasis on the diagnosis and treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury. I performed routine psychological assessments, fitness for duty evaluations and individual psychotherapy. I also did command consultations, crisis intervention and clinical supervision of psychological technicians. In the absence of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and treatment Program manager, I provided clinical oversight to that program as well.
Psychological Consultant August 2009-March 2011
I reviewed claims of mental impairment and determined eligibility for monetary benefits from the Social Security Disability and Adult Medicaid programs. I did this as a Psychological Consultant working for Disability Determination Services (DDS), the state-level agency that represents the Social Security Administration. Adult Evaluations are primarily focused on the ability to perform meaningful work. For children disability determination is based on evidence of impairment in six functional areas, all related to the performance of age-appropriate activities at school and home. In addition to disability determination, I was responsible for training the Disability Examiners in my unit on a variety of mental health-related topics including the ordering and use of personality, intelligence and neuropsychological tests; interpreting mental status evaluations; evaluating for malingering and and diagnosing mental illnesses.
Chief, Behavioral Health Clinic April 2007-July 2009
I was responsible for the delivery of mental health services to a military community of 10,000 in Kentucky with a special emphasis on treating soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. I supervised a staff of one Psychologist, two Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, three Psychiatrists, seven Social Workers, six Psychological Technicians and carried an active caseload. My clinic conducted intake interviews, mental status evaluations, fitness for duty examinations and medical retirement boards. We also provided individual therapy, group therapy, an Intensive Outpatient treatment for PTSD, crisis intervention and preventive education for the Fort Knox community.
212th Medical Detachment (Combat Stress Control) January 2006-March 2007
I served as the Combat Stress Team Leader for an Infantry Task Force of approximately 900 soldiers in and around the city of Samarra, Iraq. I supervised one Psychological Technician and routinely consulted with Physicians, Physician Assistants, Emergency Medical Technicians and Unit Commanders. I provided Preventive Education, Short-term Counseling, Fitness for Duty Evaluations and Critical Incident Stress Management in support of a wide
range of issues from problems at home to line of duty deaths.
Staff Psychologist November 2004-December 2005
I was a staff member within the Department of Behavioral Health, Ireland Army Community Hospital, Fort Knox, KY. I conducted intake interviews, mental status evaluations, fitness for duty evaluations and psychological testing for diagnostic or forensic purposes. My duties also included individual and group psychotherapy, primary preventive education, crisis intervention and reviewing cases with Psychological Technicians while working under the supervision of a Licensed Clinical Psychologist.
528th Medical Detachment (Combat Stress Control) January 2001-November 2004
I Served as Detachment Psychologist and later Commanding Officer of a 24 person Army Disaster Mental Health (Combat Stress Control) Detachment. Responsible for Primary Preventive Education, Psychiatric Triage, Short-term interventions, Command consultations and Critical Incident Stress Management during Operational Tours of Bosnia-Herzegovina (2001-2002) and Iraq (2003-2004). While not deployed overseas, we provided training in a variety of mental health related subjects to the Fort Bragg, NC community. I was formally recognized for having no completed suicides at the end of my tour of Bosnia and for having a 98% Return to Duty rate while supporting combat operations in Iraq.

I returned to active Army status and completed an APA Accredited Clinical Psychology Internship at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, GA. This program emphasized Community Mental Health and included major rotations in Psychological Assessment, Health Psychology and Child Clinical Psychology.
Clinical Specialist II May 1998-May 1999
I worked part time for Protocall Services, Inc., Portland, OR. I conducted telephonic intake, evaluation and crisis intervention services for consumers of national employee assistance programs, community mental health agencies and managed care networks. I evaluated and intervened with people in suicidal and homicidal crisis, assessed level of dangerousness, notified the authorities and provided pre-certification for people requiring hospitalization.
Human Resources Manager May 1997-January 1998
I deployed to Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina for peacekeeping duty as part of the Joint Civil-Military Task Force. I served as military staff specialist on Human Resource Management and I provided additional support to members of the International Organization/Non-governmental Organization communities. I also designed and implemented a preventive mental health program for military family members.

I worked 32 hours per week at the Community Mental Health Service, Bayne-Jones Army Hospital, Fort Polk, Louisiana while earning my masters degree. I served for 10 years with the Army in Japan, Korea and the United States. I had one year's experience as director of an outpatient substance abuse and preventive education program and three years' experience with job placement and career development counseling.
